The Elkin and Alleghany Rail Trail entranceThe Elkin and Alleghany Rail Trail or E & A Rail Trail follows north along The Big Elkin Creek (about 2 miles) you enter through it from The Elkin Municipal Park, and it also connects to the Mountain-to-sea trail.

While walking along the Elkin and Alleghany Rail Trail, signs with great information of stream life, wildlife and tree life are posted that can be very helpful in understanding your surroundings. Also, signage telling you about some of the history in the town of Elkin from a 1909 Old shoe factory now running as The Elkin Water Treatment Plant, to historical information about a woolen mill that once operated.

You will also spot some unique memorials on your walk like a spectacular art piece made from railroad spikes and track parts, or a few different Gongs to hit and listen to the beautiful instrument, some say it brings you strength and good fortune.

The Elkin Creek Mountain Bike Trail is also located on the E & A Rail Trail for those who enjoy an adventurous bike ride, signs are posted for entrance points for beginners to advanced bike riders.

Several benches are also along the trail where you can sit, enjoy the view, and listen to the soothing creek flow.

So next time you visit stop by The Elkin and Alleghany Rail Trail for a short nature hike, it really is beautiful!

Campfire Hash
Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed (about 2 pounds)
  • 1-pound smoked kielbasa or Polish sausage, halved and sliced
  • 1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chiles
  • 1 can (15-1/4 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained

  • In a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat, cook and stir onion in oil under tender. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer. Add potatoes. Cook, uncovered, for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add kielbasa; cook and stir until meat and potatoes are tender and browned, 10-15 minutes. Stir in chiles and corn; heat through.
