Reynolda Gardens – A Jewel in Winston-Salem

May 28, 2024

This month we would like to spotlight one of Winston-Salem’s most cherished treasures: Reynolda Gardens. Whether you’re a local or planning a visit, this picturesque destination offers a blend of history, horticulture, and relaxation that’s sure to enchant.

A Brief History

Reynolda Gardens is part of the larger Reynolda Estate, which was originally developed by Katharine Smith Reynolds and her husband R.J. Reynolds, the founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The estate, designed as a self-sufficient community, was completed in the early 20th century. Katharine Reynolds envisioned the estate as a progressive, sustainable farm and a family retreat. The gardens themselves, designed by landscape architect Thomas Sears, were intended to complement the family’s lifestyle, focusing on both beauty and productivity. After Katharine’s death, the estate went through several transitions. In 1965, the gardens were opened to the public, managed by Wake Forest University, ensuring that Katharine’s vision of a community resource was preserved.

Explore the Gardens

Visitors can wander through 129 acres of meticulously maintained gardens. The formal gardens feature a variety of seasonal flowers, shrubs, and trees. Don’t miss the greenhouse, which showcases exotic plants from around the world. Each section of the garden offers a different visual delight, from the colorfully planted flower beds to the tranquil Japanese garden.

Visit the Reynolda House Museum of American Art

Adjacent to the gardens, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art offers a cultural complement to the natural beauty outside. The museum houses an impressive collection of American art, spanning from the colonial period to contemporary works. The house itself is a marvel of early 20th-century architecture, filled with period furnishings and original details.

Nature Trails

For those who enjoy a more active exploration, Reynolda Gardens features several nature trails. These trails meander through woodlands and fields, offering a peaceful retreat and opportunities for birdwatching and spotting local wildlife. The trails are well marked and suitable for all fitness levels. Shops and Restaurants In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Reynolda Gardens offers a charming shopping and dining experience in Reynolda Village. The village, originally part of the estate’s working farm, has been transformed into a delightful area filled with unique shops and cozy restaurants. Visitors can browse through boutique stores offering a range of products from artisanal crafts and gifts to fashionable clothing and accessories. After shopping, you can enjoy a meal at one of the on-site restaurants, which offer a variety of dining options to suit all tastes. From casual cafes perfect for a quick bite or a coffee break to upscale restaurants serving delicious, locally sourced meals, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Many of these establishments are housed in beautifully preserved historic buildings, adding to the charming atmosphere of Reynolda Village.
