Reeves Theater & Cafe – Elkin NC

The historic 1940s Reeves Theater & Cafe located in the heart of Elkin, NC has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years, and it’s now pulsating with the vibrant rhythm of live music. What was once a hub for cinematic entertainment has evolved into a haven for local artists and a celebration of the profound love for music. The journey of this iconic establishment began decades ago when it first opened its doors as a classic movie theater, showcasing the silver screen marvels of the time.

However, as times changed and multiplex movie theaters popped up in larger towns, the theater faced the inevitable challenge of adapting to shifting trends in entertainment. The theater fell into disuse, its once-glamorous facade fading into obscurity.

But the spirit of this beloved institution refused to fade away. In a stroke of inspiration and dedication to preserving cultural heritage, a group of passionate individuals embarked on a mission to breathe new life into the aging theater. Thus began a meticulous renovation project that aimed to honor the venue’s rich history while ushering it into a new era of artistic expression.

Now transformed into a dynamic music venue, the theater resonates with the soul-stirring melodies of local artists and musicians. Every weekend, the stage comes alive with a diverse array of performances, spanning genres from jazz and blues to rock and folk. Audiences are treated to unforgettable experiences, as they sway to the rhythms and lyrics that fill the air with palpable energy and emotion.

Moreover, Reeves Theater has become a nurturing ground for emerging talent, providing a platform for aspiring artists to showcase their craft and connect with their community. From open mic nights to intimate concerts, it’s a space where creativity knows no bounds and where the love for music knows no limits.

As we reflect on the journey of this remarkable establishment, we’re reminded of the enduring power of music to unite, inspire, and transform. In a world often fraught with discord, it serves as a universal language that transcends barriers and fosters harmony among all who embrace its enchanting embrace.

Cooking at Camp

Dutch Oven Mac and Cheese
dutch oven mac and cheeseIngredients

  • cups 2% milk
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 450 grams macaroni pasta or shells
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • dash of paprika
  • Tabasco for serving.

Instructions:
You will need a 12-inch 8-quart Dutch oven with a lid.

  1. In a large, heavy bottomed pot, such as a cast iron Dutch oven, combine the 2% milk, water, and salt. Bring to a boil, then tip in the pasta, stirring slowly with a wooden spoon.
  2. Cook the pasta in the milk, partially covered with a lid, over medium-high heat until al dente, about 9-10 minutes; it should be slightly underdone when you bite into it. Do not drain!
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Stirring constantly, add the butter, Dijon and evaporated milk to the pot. Slowly sprinkle in the cheese, a handful at a time, and stir until melted. The sauce will thicken as the cheese melts and the pasta finishes cooking.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. Season with pepper and paprika. Taste the mac & cheese and shake in a little extra salt, if desired. Cool slightly, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and coats the pasta. Serve at once.
